Distinguished Guests in your respective capacities

Ladies and Gentlemen

I bring you warm greetings from Management and Staff of Uganda Management Institute at this 16th Graduation Ceremony.

Madam Chancellor and the Chief Guest, It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to our 16th Graduation Ceremony. Allow me Madam Chancellor

to welcome in a special way our Chief Guest, the Minister of Information, Communication and Technology.

Madam Chancellor, our mission to reach out to the whole of this country and to provide the much desired skills and expertise to the work force of this

country is only quenched when we reach out to branches like here in Mbale and we have graduands prepared with skills of today’s challenge.

We as an institute Madam Chancellor are not offering knowledge and degrees and diplomas for one to fill their cabinet with certificates, we are empowering a

workforce with the skills and expertise to ask “why”, find solutions to problems, become leaders in their various sectors

and be able to push the boundaries of achievement.

Madam Chancellor, in this graduation trail, I have mentioned the second phase of our estates master plan, Mbale is at the very heart of this journey.

We are almost concluding the first phase with a state of the art classroom and administration block in Kampala and a completed home in Gulu.

Our second phase will among others have a grand multipurpose 14 storey complex in Kampala, expand our facilities in Gulu and most importantly build a new home here in Mbale.

We are in advanced stages of acquiring land here in Mbale, thanks to the District and Municipal governments.

I promise the Mbale community that you will have a beautiful piece of architecture that UMI will call home no sooner than the process is complete.

Madam Chancellor I would like to encourage the local elite in this region to make use of our presence in Mbale. Please make time to come and enhance your skills,

earn your Masters’ degree or Postgraduate Diploma while you work here in Mbale, and you are lucky to do it with an Institute of great repute, we are here.

The civil society, NGOs and public agencies here in Mbale I implore you to make use of our horned and polished consultancy and research skills,

you can hardly get better elsewhere.

Come to us, let us conceive the projects together and help you roll them out. We have the capacity to help Ministries, Departments

and Agencies to monitor and evaluate the projects you roll out and we are here to help you deliver.

Madam Chancellor and our Chief Guest, I would like to highlight our center for professional courses which continues to be a trail blazer at the Institute and internationally.

I encourage the graduands here to make use of the center. We run professional programs such as Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS)

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). UMI is now one of the best performing accredited

study Centre for professional trainings in East and Central Africa. The Institute has of recent received 20 commendation letters from

the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM-UK). UMI has been accredited to teach digital diploma in professional marketing by the CIM-UK in addition to CILT-UK.

These are critical areas that promote accountability and reduce corruption especially in the procurement areas.

Madam Chancellor and Chief Guest in this graduation cycle UMI has graduated her first PhD graduands. We request everybody to join us celebrate this

remarkable achievement.

Madam Chancellor, today we graduate 271 graduands, out of which 171 are males and 100 are females who have satisfied the requirements

for the award of Masters Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Ordinary Diplomas.

I specifically would like to reach out to Mbale to join the PhD program and deliver the next cohort of PhDs. We have opened our masters programmes in our various

branches and I encourage the lot graduating here today to return and pursue their research for your Master’s degrees.

Madam Chancellor and our Chief Guest, here today allow me to emphasize the aspect of Community Social Responsibility being part of training menu,

we have offered to these graduands. Madam Chancellor, Our Chief Guest, invited guests and our most esteemed graduands,

a society that lacks the virtues and values of community is heartless and corrupt. It is our ultimate mission as an Institute to not only

impart management skills but equip our participants with a sense of responsibility to the communities where they live, grew up and serve.

It is the Philosophy that UMI imparts in the participants that move out of its gates.

UMI aspires to promote the aspect of community service in most of our trainings. We hope this new approach to our training will contribute to

the development of a concept of community and community service.

This second yet related subject of my speech today is the value of soft skills  Madam Chancellor and Our Chief Guest, as an Institute we have taken a

deliberate mission to focus these graduands here on the values and importance of soft skills in their day to day lives. Among the most enduring soft skills are:

  • Strong work ethics and accountability
  • Communication skills
  • Creative problem solving
  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Branding and Marketing

As the nation gears itself for the middle income status it is paramount that our human resource is equipped to meet the challenges of a faster

more inquisitive world. It is to this end that the Institute offers expertise to skill the nation’s workforce with the required both hard and soft skills.

Madam Chancellor and our Chief Guest despite our successes, the Institute has had some challenges namely:

Lack of space for training and other services. Our programs are growing in popularity by the day. We have been forced to shelve some highly demanded

programs and also take on a few applicants due to lack of training space. This explains why we are fast tracking the infrastructure development.

I wish to congratulate all of the graduands upon this major achievement and wish them well in their careers as they apply their newly acquired

skills, knowledge and competencies.

This major achievement which necessitated you to sacrifice your valuable time to do the various activities and the knowledge you have

gained at UMI will not only benefit you as individuals but your organizations and this country as a whole. The successes in development

of this country now lie in your hands.  Remember UMI Alumni are never in second places.  They always excel and struggle to be in the driver’s

seat all the time and remain in them.  Go out and demonstrate positively that you have been at UMI. From today you are alumni of UMI and we expect you to

contribute to the development of this Institute. Go out and be ambassador of this Institute.

To those who have passed the postgraduate programs with second lower class and above will be given provisional admissions for

Masters in Management Studies.  You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Allow me to thank you Madam Chancellor, Chairperson and Members of the Governing Council, my fellow members of staff for the tireless efforts

you have exerted to make sure that the Institute keeps running.  Your spirit of team work cannot go unrecognized.

I wish all Graduands a joyous day and a prosperous future as you hold the flag of UMI high up in the sky.

For God and My Country.

 Dr. James L Nkata
